The basics of this story are that a young father who was a baseball star in his college days, his wife, their 9 year old son, and a younger daughter (I can't remember how old she is) battle leukemia in the son. The book begins with the father racing across town to the hospital where he finds out his beloved son is no longer in remission. His greatest wish is that he will one day play catch with his son, but that hope is looking less likely with every setback. The family is transferred to a hospital a couple hours away to get better treatment during this relapse. There they meet a Detroit Tigers baseball player who sets out to fulfill the dying boy's wish - that his father will play in a major league game. This book is the story of the journey to fulfill that wish.
I need to point out that this is a Christian book but the references to God and the Bible aren't in your face, but are appropriately given. I greatly enjoyed this book, not only as a mom to 4 young kids, but also as a registered nurse. My heart broke for this family, as one of my biggest fears is that my child will have to battle cancer. I could identify with the emotions and struggles this father expressed.
I highly recommend this book to anyone!
